A pack of samples consists of multiple sounds, loops and one-shots, which mostly help out the producers in creating the base for their productions.

These sample packs are so helpful that many music professional use these samples in the start of music production. These sample packs can be a source of inspiration for many music producers.

Sample packs are a source of income for its owners. Almost anyone can make a sample pack if he/she has sense of creativity and hunger to make it happen. In this article we will discuss about the creative and technical grounds to make your own sample pack.

Creative Aspects

1. Originality

The vital part of a creative process is to keep it original. If you will try to copy someone then you will lose your originality and there will be 100s of such packs out there in which yours will never standout. Your target market is producers and they are in search for something unique and not from the shelf, so if you can create something which is original only then it will grab the attention of the producers.

2. Genre/Style

If you are just a beginner, try creating your first sample pack with familiar style and genre. You can also use the combination of multiple genres, but the idea is to pick one particular style that will help you in making a well formulated sample pack. For reference, just have a look on the packs available at many websites and understand how other sample makers are doing it.

3. Instrumentation

Instrumentation is very important, whether you are creating a drum sample pack, a bass pack or maybe a vocal sample pack. If this process in done right manner, instrumentation will fasten the whole creation procedure. In the beginning I will recommend that start your process by using only one instrument. The key here is to think big and start small. It’s interesting to see how small things like snares, hi hats and couple kicks can make your project outstanding.

4. In the Box or Not

If you want to make your sample pack completely in-the-box you must consider multiple factors such as budget, choice of instrument and preference of music. There are number of plugins and tools available if you want to transmute your music. The good thing about using in-the-box route is you will have plenty of resources. Those who have opportunity to record their samples in recording studio can transmute them in-the-box later. You can choose any way around just make sure your sounds have ability to standout in the cluster.

Technical aspects

1. Categories and assets

One of the most significant aspects during creation of sample pack is the number of samples present in the pack. Normally a small pack of samples have 50 to 150 samples, although big packs can go up to 300 to 1000 samples. Experts suggest start with small pack then go for big packs.

In Experts opinion before submitting your samples to big platforms you must label your samples in a proper manner. For your reference here are some examples

A sample pack normally divides into two parts, first is one-shot and second is loops.

Example: Drums -> Kick / Snare / Hi Hat / Toms ->SamplePackName_Kick_key_x

*key = key of tuned one-shot, x = number prefix

Loops folder structure:

Synth Example: Synths -> Category -> 120bpm, 130bpm, 140bpm ->SamplePackName_SynthLoop_key_bpm

*key = key of loop, x = number prefix, bpm = tempo of track

2. Making sure loops loop

You must keep one thing in mind while programming loops thas samples loops in a perfect order without any problems, you can simply do this by using DAW.  The start and end times must loop without any glitches and one has to put on fades to refute an clicks and pops.  For more information you can read a book named an ‘excellent guide on different ways you can loop” on tweakheadz.

3. Maximizing audio quality

Last but not the least while making a sample pack one  has to ensure that recording must be done in highest possible quality. Furthermore samples are mostly released at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, 24-bit. In experts opinion using mp3s and lower quailty audio file recording  wont be good for your samples. Try to start recording your sample at 48 kHz and 24 bit.

Hopefully by using this guide you will be able to make your own sample packs in no time. There is no need to rely on existing sample packs infact use your creativity to come up with new and unique sound tracks. If you have better insight regarding this topic do let us know in the comment section.
