Audition the bass through the full chord sequence. Matching key labels narrow the search, but a bass note still needs to fit the chord playing at that moment. If a phrase has slides or sustained notes, check the transitions between chords as well as the downbeats.
Leave room for the rhythm
Listen to the kick and bass together before judging either in isolation. Long bass notes can hide the attack of a kick; a busier bass phrase can compete with syncopated drums. Start by adjusting timing and levels, then use the processing tools in your DAW if needed.
